Musculi, 2016. A Latin word meaning ‘Muscle’, ‘Musculi’ is an avant-garde ensemble inspired by musculature, an abstract concept exploring muscle tissues and movement; a subversive approach akin to the composition and artistic performance style observed in Jocelyn Ho. The structure of the material used, commonly known as spacer mesh, is a compilation of millions of micro polyester strands reminiscent to the level of detail found in the muscle fibres and structures that enables bodily gestures.
In concert with Bio Lux (imagined in collaboration with Nobuho Nagasawa and HUL ARNOLD), Musculi coalesces careful synergy between fashion, art, and technology.
Using re-claimed industrial duck canvas, the TOTE BAG was created as a nod to the traditional heavy duty work man tote bag of the industrial era. The TOTE BAG was redesigned to accommodate your minimal tech needs, i.e. Laptop, tablet, smart phone amongst the other daily portable necessities. The TOTE BAG is completely man made, from its hand coated textured outer surface, to the cut & sewn assembly of the finished product by Troy Hul Arnold himself .
Troy Hul Arnold in his then Bronx New York Studio, seen here in the process of hand making an HUL ARNOLD TOTE BAG. Troy fully hand coats the outer textured surface of the re-claimed duck canvas before the cut & sew process.
BLACK PEPPER VOLUME.1 demonstrates the HUL ARNOLD man experiencing the many modes of costume for different moods of the day. The volume seeks to explore the complexity of the perfect look, and the anxiety it may inflict upon the individual as he is in constant indecisive decision. The visual takes us through the several attempts to get a desired outcome. An exhausting part of the day that is looked forward to. In the end he notices that he had been sufficiently dressed for the occasion all along, but the deception of insecurity led him to believe the contrary. The narrative seeks to address the minute yet tediously exhilarating part of our daily preparation effort for the gratifying social approval.
The collection completely imagined and assembled in the HUL ARNOLD studio, as an intentional laborious effort to oppose fast fashion and its carbon foot print. The Volume embracing the "Slow Fashion" old world format proceeds further to exercise past techniques of lightly hand tailored details within each garment, in collaboration with traditional machine sewing. Highlighted details include; corset boning within tailored jackets utilized for structure, snaps, hook & eye closures replace unnecessary buttonhole functions. The collection designed to the "ONE WORLD" concept allows the woman & man to be equally part of the same dilemma.

SIMPLE ASSEMBLY a capsule designed to revise the archetypal shapes of traditional work wear, and reimagined through the scope of a subtle and delicate hand. The capsule study begins with the work shirt, inspired by 1940's military work wear that is re-created using Japanese flannel, eyelet, pique, and cotton velvet for a softer yet refined appearance from its traditional rigid exterior.
Other core pieces on view include the Yukata: yu·ka·ta, yo͝oˈkädə/ noun; a light cotton kimono. The piece is revised to have more use with the addition of pockets, fabrication in knit ponte or silk, trimmed with an alpaca collar ultimately transitioning the piece from basic robe to an evening or outerwear piece.
The project continues using familiar staples of the wearers wardrobe. The pieces are then styled through the lens of the subject (MAN), and his personal preference of dress based on the occasion.
All pieces were hand made and assembled in the then HUL ARNOLD Bronx New York studio to mimic the stream lined conveyor like assembly one would see at a mass reproduction factory setting, only on a miniature scale.
